When people are considering fostering this is the number one question we get asked. Though there is no way to know how short, or long a foster dog stays with you there are factors that influence the length of their stay. Those include - the size of the dog, the temperament of the dog, age, behavior, and training. It also depends on you, the foster. Are you posting he dog on your social medias? Taking the dog out to be seen in public outside of adoption events? The more the dog is exposed the better likelihood it will be adopted sooner.
Each dog is different, but it's important to pay attention to your dogs individual personality traits. Often times dogs are shy and scared the first few days in a new environment. They may have accidents the first few days when adjusting to their new environment. For a more detailed explanation please refer to our resources section under the "more" tab.
When you sign up to foster a dog that's already under the care of the rescue this is what we ask -
That you can commit to a three-month minimum, and then a 30-day notice if you cannot continue. Our team will do our very best to find a replacement foster in the event that you are unable to continue fostering. This does not mean that a new foster will be found, but we will focus on finding a replacement as soon as possible.
Since we are a small non-profit, we aren't able to help everyone who finds a stray dog especially in San Antonio. If you find a dog on the streets and you want to partner with us to get them adopted, you will need to first check to make sure it's not someone's lost dog. After that you would be financially responsible for getting their vaccines and getting them spayed or neutered. The dog would also need to go through an interview process to determine if he or she is a good fit for our rescue. If everything is approved the dog would be allowed at our adoption events. This does not mean the Rescue does everything for you, you would still be responsible for marketing the dog and looking for a home. We are just here to assist and make the process a little easier!
In short, usually no. If you come to an adoption event and see a dog you like it's rare you'll get to walk away with your dog the same day. We like to do home visits with the dog, introductions with your dogs if you already have a pet, look over the application with our team, and make sure we pick the bet fit for our dogs. We want to make sure that everyone has had enough time to think about the commitment they are making. This ensures we have less dogs returning to our rescue after they've been adopted.
If you adopted a dog through our rescue, and it turns out it's not the right fit we will always take our dogs back. If you were the original foster for the dog, it would go back to a foster situation where you can bring the dog to our events, and we can help find a new home for them. If you were not the original foster, we will help look for a new foster until placement is found.
